Chapter 17

Lila, Protector of the Free Islands

“What do you mean, we have to split our forces?” I said angrily to Senga and Adair. Maybe I shouldn’t have been angry with them directly, but right now I couldn’t stop it from spilling out. Here we were, leagues from what had once been our home, in open shipping routes, with not enough warriors, with no home to go to – and now Senga and Adair were telling me that we would have to divide up!

“There’s a battle coming our way,” Senga said seriously, jutting out her chin to meet my eye defiantly. “We saw it on Kim’s back, and it’ll be here before nightfall.”

In desperation, I wished Danu and Crux were here! We were standing on the decks of the Orchard, with the twin’s dragon Kim paddling alongside in the water. It’s not that I had to ask Danu for his wisdom – it was just that I would feel so much better with him at my side. And Crux. There is nothing like having a dragon on the other side of your mind to bring you a boost of confidence.

“How many?” I said.

“Five boats all in all. Three are islanders, and two Roskildean.”

“Three Free Islanders? Well then – we have plenty in our favor…”

“They were merchant’s vessels, Lila,” Adair informed me. “They’re fat and low and have no proper defenses. One of them is listing as she moves as well. And the two Havick ships are the large guard caravels.”

“Guard ships. Outstanding,” I spat. “Okay. No Dead Ships in sight?” I asked worriedly. If there were those, then we really would be in trouble.

‘I have died, and yet am alive once more!’ The sudden memory of the Dead Captain, or ‘Jarl’ as he called himself, assaulted me. The way that he had casually taken my father’s and the others’ lives; and not just by killing them, but by seemingly draining the life right out of them. I shivered.

“Lila?” Senga was looking at me, her determination mollified by a look of worry. “Three ships in trouble, one of them won’t make it, against two of the Roskildean fleet. What do you say?”

“Ah,” I shook the dark thoughts from my mind. “And we have ten dragons, the Orchard – which will never be able to fight, and the Ariel, which will.” I totted up the odds. They were good, I thought. Ten dragons against two regular guard boats? Those were the sorts of odds that I had liked, before.

But what if one of the dragons gets injured? I thought, my mind again returning to the pile of bodies that the dead sea captain Lars and his other lieutenants had dropped to the earth. How could I allow any of those under my care to be injured, ever again? My mother Pela kept telling me there was nothing I could have done – that the dead are just too powerful… but what if that wasn’t the case? What if I could have saved them,
